Education
Mr. Mateo received his law degree from Universidad de las Américas (2004) and studied the postgraduate degree in Administrative Law from Universidad Panamericana (2007). He astudied his LLM in Energy Law and Policy at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy of the University of Dundee, United Kingdom (2011).
Principal areas of practice
Mr. Mateo provides advice to national and foreign companies, mainly in energy (oil & gas, power and renewables) and water projects. Mr. Mateo constantly advises sponsors, lenders and even the Mexican Government in all the stages of said projects, from its planning, financing, development, implementation and execution. Likewise, Mr. Mateo actively participates in corporate and commercial transactions, such as mergers and acquisitions and corporate financings.
His main areas of practice are Energy Law, Project Finance, Corporate Practice and Civil and Commercial Contracts.
Professional Background
Mr. Mateo began his professional career with the firm Suinaga y Suinaga Abogados, S.C. as an intern and then associate, practicing in the areas of Corporate Law and Civil, Commercial, and Administrative Litigation.
He joined Barrera, Siqueiros y Torres Landa, S.C. in 2005, where he has focused his practice on advising national and multinational companies on energy, and natural resource projects and general commercial and corporate transactions. During 2010, he acted as foreing associate at the British law firm CMS Cameron McKenna in the city of Aberdeen, UK, advising companies on energy projects (primarily hydrocarbons) in the North Sea.
Published Works
He published the articles titled “Regulation of Marine Oil Spills in Mexico” in Oil, Gas & Energy Law (www.ogel.org, 2010), “Crédito Mercantil” in the Barrera, Siqueiros y Torres Landa Legal Report (2007) and “Ley para la promoción y desarrollo de bioenergéticos” (2008).
Relevant Cases
Mr. Mateo has advised companies such as Pemex, Apache, Schlumberger, Seadrill, British Gas, Statoil, Exterran Energy, Mitsui, Q-Cells, Goldcorp, Siliken, Consol, Macquarie and Dalikia in several projects involving the acquisition of assets and companies of the sector, project financings, implementation of regulatory structures, planning and structure of projects and advice in day-to-day operational issues.
He currently acts as teacher of Commercial Law at the Universidad Anahuac del Sur.
He participates in Pro bono cases of the firm mainly advising Ashoka Emprendedores Sociales.
